Our love for God is not to be defined by some passionate emotion within our hearts.
Rather, our love for God is to be defined by faithful obedience in our character and conduct.
Thus without faithful obedience, any claim to love the Lord our God is self-deception.
Even so, in love for God we must flee selfishness, sinfulness, worldliness, and covetousness.
Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God,
which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments
to a thousand generations.
Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God,
and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.
And it shall come to pass,
if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day,
to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul . . .
For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them,
to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him . . .
In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways,
and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments,
that thou mayest live and multiply.
That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice,
and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days.
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me:
and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father,
and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words:
and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings:
and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
1 John 2:15-16
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.
If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life,
is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Ye adulterers and adulteresses,
know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?
Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other;
or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
