(This meditation is a companion to a previous meditation: Expect No Light from the Darkness)
By nature the system of this world is completely characterized by spiritual darkness.
In contrast, we believers are called to be the spiritual light of this spiritually dark world,
ever reflecting and shining forth the light of our Lord, His gospel, and His righteouness.
Yet if we fail to reflect and shine forth this spiritual light by covering it up
through ungodliness, unrighteousness, carnality, and worldliness,
there will be no other spiritual light available for the darkness of this present evil world.
Ye are the light of the world.
A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick;
and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
2 Corinthians 4:1-6
Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
but have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty,
not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully;
but by manifestation of the truth
commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not,
lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God,
should shine unto them.
For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord;
and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts,
to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:18-20
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ,
and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
to wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself,
not imputing their trespasses unto them;
and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us:
we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light:
for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke,
in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
holding forth the word of life;
that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
