Psalm 91:1 reads, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” The Lord our God is the most high God, the almighty and eternal Lord God of heaven and earth. As the most high God, the Lord our God does indeed involve himself in the affairs of our lives and does indeed care for His own with faithful lovingkindness. So then, how should we who are God’s own dear children respond unto Him as the most high God? Through a study within the book of the Psalms, let us consider six ways in which we are to respond unto the Lord our God, as the most high God.

Sing Praise to the Name of the Lord Most High - Psalm 7:17
Psalm 91:1 reads, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” The Lord our God is the most high God, the almighty and eternal Lord God of heaven and earth. As the most high God, the Lord our God does indeed involve himself in the affairs of our lives and does indeed care for His own with faithful lovingkindness. So then, how should we who are God’s own dear children respond unto Him as the most high God? Through a study within the book of the Psalms, let us consider six ways in which we are to respond unto the Lord our God, as the most high God.
We must walk daily in the fellowship of the Lord our God, the most high God.
In Psalm 91:1 the psalmist declared, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Again in verses 9-10 he declared, “Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.” Throughout our daily walk, we must dwell in the secret place of our Lord’s blessed fellowship. We must make His fellowship our spiritual habitation for every step along the way of our lives. Daily, we must meet with our Lord, walk with our Lord, submit to our Lord, and follow after our Lord. Then we shall know the Lord our God, the most high God, as our refuge. Then we shall abide under the protective shadow of His almighty presences.
We must place the trust of our hearts in the Lord our God, the most high God.
In Psalm 91:2-8 the psalmist declared, “I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.” Yes, we must set our trust in Him as our refuge and our fortress. Even so, in Psalm 7:17 David concluded this psalm, saying, “I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.” Yet he began this psalm in verse 1, saying, “O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me.” Again in Psalm 9:1-2 David proclaimed, “I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.” Then in verses 9-10 he declared, “The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.” Yet again in Psalm 21:1 David exclaimed, “The king shall joy in thy strength, O LORD; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!” Then in verse 7 he declared, “For the king trusteth in the LORD, and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved.” And yet again in Psalm 56:2-4 David declared, “Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.” Finally, in Psalm 57:1 David declared, “Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.” Indeed, we must trust in the Lord our God, the most high God, with all our heart. We must trust that our Lord will be a refuge in our times of trouble. We must trust that our Lord will not forsake those who seek Him. We must trust that our Lord will deliver us through His mercy and grace. We must trust that our Lord will guide us, support us, strengthen us, and grow us through our troubles.
We must set the love of our hearts upon the Lord our God, the most high God.
In Psalm 91:14 the Lord our God Himself proclaims, “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.” We must set the love of our hearts upon the Lord our God. We must make Him and keep Him as the first love and first priority of our hearts and lives. We must love Him with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength. And we must demonstrate our love to Him by keeping His commandments.
We must call in need through prayer unto the Lord our God, the most high God.
In Psalm 91:15-16 the Lord our God promised concerning those who set their love upon Him, “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.” Even so, in Psalm 50:14-15 the instruction is given, “Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: and call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.” Psalm 56:1-2 David prayed unto the Lord his God, the most high God, saying, “Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.” Again in Psalm 57:1-3 prayed unto the Lord his God, the most high God, saying, “Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me. He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.” In our times of trouble, this is the manner in which we demonstrate the trust of our hearts in the Lord our God, the most high God. We must call upon Him through prayer because we trust in Him with all our heart. Will full assurance of faith in Him, we must pray that the Lord our God, the most high God, might be merciful unto us and might be a refuge for us. Then He will answer our need. Then He will be with us in trouble, and will deliver us from our trouble, and will honor us bless us through our trouble. And then we must give thanksgiving and glory unto His name.
We must not be moved with fear because the Lord our God is the most high God.
In Psalm 46:1-7 the psalmist declared, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” In like manner, in Psalm 56:2-4 David declared, “Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.” With full assurance of faith, we must trust in the Lord our God, themost high God, as our refuge and strength. With full assurance of faith, we must trust in Him as “a very present help in trouble.” With full assurance of faith, we must trust that He is with us and that He will help us. Therefore, with full assurance of faith, we must not be moved with fear when everything is falling apart around us and when many are in opposition against us.
We must order our lives in righteousness before the Lord our God, the most high God.
In Psalm 50:14 the instruction is given, “Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High.” Then in verses 22-23 the Lord our God Himself declares, “Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver. Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.” We must repent of any way in which we have sinfully departed from the Lord our God, the most high God. We must order our lives aright in righteousness and true holiness, in order that we might walk pleasing before the Lord our God, the most high God. We must faithfully fulfill our commitments and service unto the Lord our God, the most high God. We must be “steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.”
We must offer praise and thanksgiving unto the Lord our God as the most high God.
Again in Psalm 50:14 the instruction is given, “Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High.” And again in verse 23 the Lord our God Himself declares, “Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.” Even so, in Psalm 7:17 David expressed his commitment, saying, “I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.” Again in Psalm 9:1-2 David expressed his commitment, saying, “I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.” Finally, in Psalm 92:1 the truth is delivered, “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High.”
