1.  A Purpose for the Proverbs

Proverbs 1:1-4 – “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; to know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; to give subtilty [discernment] to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.”

Proverbs 21:1 – “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.”

The Wisdom or Foolishness of the Ruler
The Success or Destruction of the Ruler
The Favor or Wrath of the Ruler

1.  The Wisdom of God’s Word Is Better

Proverbs for Life

Proverbs 20:6 – “Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?”

A proverbial statement might be defined as a short, meaningful saying that expresses a significant, substantial truth for life.  In the book of the Proverbs, a proverb is often constructed with two lines, presenting a comparison or contrast.  Proverbs 20:6 presents a truth of contrast.  Whereas the great majority of men will boldly proclaim their own goodness, a truly faithful man is a quite rare and precious find.

The foundational principle for the entire book of the Proverbs and for the spiritual wisdom that this book teaches is found in Proverbs 1:7 – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”  So then, what does the book of the Proverbs directly indicate concerning the fear of the Lord?

  I.  The inspired penman for the book of the Proverbs. (Proverbs 1:1)
 II.  The divine purpose for the book of the Proverbs. (Proverbs 1:2-4)
III.  The necessary practice for the book of the Proverbs. (Proverbs 1:5)
IV.  The foundational principle for the book of the Proverbs. (Proverbs 1:7)

Proverbs for Life

Proverbs 22:2 presents the truth, saying, “The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.” 

Among the sixty-six books of the Bible, the book of the Proverbs reveals God’s wisdom for our daily living.  This book of the Bible speaks concerning many aspects of our lives.  It speaks concerning our relationship with the Lord, concerning our relationship to God’s truth, concerning our relationship to righteous living, concerning our relationship with others, concerning the relationships within our families, concerning our relationship with friends, concerning our practice of verbal communication, concerning our viewpoint of money and material things, concerning our diligence in work and labor, etc.

In Proverbs 22:2 we find a truth concerning our relationship with the Lord our God.  In fact, this verse reveals one aspect of the Lord’s place in our lives.  Now, this verse does not speak concerning the place that the Lord ought to have in our lives.  It does not speak concerning the place that we ought to grant unto the Lord our God in our lives.  Rather, this verse speaks concerning the place that the Lord our God has in our lives regardless of our submission unto Him.  It speaks concerning the place that the Lord has in our lives as THE Lord God, whether we are righteously obedient unto Him or rebelliously wicked before Him. 

Yea, overall the book of the Proverbs reveals four basic truths concerning the Lord’s place in our lives.

Proverbs 31:28-31 – “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.  Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.  Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.  Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”

 V.  The Precept for Marital Devotion & Delight

The book of the Proverbs presents significant wisdom concerning godly parenting, and especially concerning the responsibility of godly discipline in godly parenting.  Furthermore, the book of the Proverbs clearly indicates that parents will find gladness or grief, rejoicing or regret and reproach, satisfaction or sorrow and shame based upon the manner in which they train up their children.

Having considered in two previous posts (see above) what the book of the Proverbs teaches concerning the direction and the demonstration of our love, let us now consider what the book of the Proverbs teaches concern-ing our hatred.
