Weekly Sermon
This sermon is a companion to two previous sermons: And His Name Shall Be Called Wonderful - Isaiah 9:6
And His Name Shall Be Called Counsellor - Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6-7 reads, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulders: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”
Now, the fullness of this promise and prophecy has not yet been fulfilled. The Lord Jesus Christ has not yet come in the fullness of His glory as King of kings and Lord of lords to rule and reign over the whole world from the throne of David in Jerusalem. Yet the fulfillment of this promise and prophecy has indeed begun to be fulfilled. Unto us that Child has been born. Unto us that Son has been given. The zeal of the Lord is already at work. God the Father has already sent God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to be born into this world as God in human flesh. The fulfillment of this promise and prophecy has already begun in Christ’s first coming, and most certainly the fulfillment will be completed in Christ’s second coming. Amen, and amen. “Even so come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20)
However, the focus of this message is not upon the coming of our Lord, but upon the char-acter of our Lord. In the closing portion of verse 6 five titles are given to reveal the character of our Lord Jesus Christ, God the Son who was given to be born in human flesh – “And His name [His title] shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” In this message let us consider five truths concerning the third of these titles – “And His name shall be called . . . The mighty God.”
Now, the phrase, “The mighty God,” refers to the one true and living God who is almighty in His eternal Person and in His sovereign works. So then, in what ways is our Lord Jesus Christ to be called The mighty God?

The mighty God.”
Now, the phrase, “The mighty God,” refers to the one true and living God who is almighty in His eternal Person and in His sovereign works. So then, in what ways is our Lord Jesus Christ to be called The mighty God?
He is the true and living Lord God.
Our Lord Jesus Christ is God the Son, the second Per-son of the triune (three-in-one) Godhead. In John 1:1-2 God’s Word declares, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” Now, this “Word” is defined for us in verse 14 where God’s Word adds, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” This “Word” is the “the only begotten of the Father” who “was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” Then in verses 17-18 God’s Word reveals His name, saying, “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” Our Lord Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God the Father, and “the only begotten of the Father” is the Word who “was made flesh and dwelt among us.”
Our Lord Jesus Christ is the Word who was “in the beginning,” eternally with God the Father in the perfect unity and equality of the triune (three-in-one) Godhead. As such, our Lord Jesus Christ is God, the one true and living God, the second Person of the one true and living, triune (three-in-one) Godhead. Even so, Matthew 1:23 speaks concerning Him, saying, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” Again Philippians 2:6 speaks concerning Him, saying, “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.” Yet again 1 Timothy 3:16 speaks concerning Him, saying, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” Thus Titus 2:13 proclaims that we believers are “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and [even] our Saviour Jesus Christ.” Yea, in Revelation 1:8 our Lord Jesus Christ Himself proclaimed, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Again in Revelation 22:12-13 He Himself proclaimed, “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” Indeed, He is the almighty God.
He is the almighty Creator of all things.
Concerning our Lord Jesus Christ, the Word who was in the beginning with God the Father in the perfect unity and equality of the eternal, triune (three-in-one) God and who was “made flesh and dwelt among us” – concerning Him John 1:3 states, “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” To this verse 10 adds, “He was in the world [that is – He “was made flesh, and dwelt among us”], and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.” Again Colossians 1:16 speaks concerning Him, saying, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.” Yet again Hebrews 1:10-12 speaks concerning Him, saying, “And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: they shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; and as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.” Indeed, He is the almighty Creator God.
He is the almighty Preserver of all things.
Concerning our Lord Jesus Christ, Colossians 1:16 continues into verse 17, saying, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” In like manner, Hebrews 1:1-3 states, “God [that is – God the Father], who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son [our Lord Jesus Christ], whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; who [God the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ] being the brightness of his [God the Father’s] glory, and the express image of his [God the Father’s] person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” By our Lord Jesus Christ “all things consist,” and He upholds all things “by the word of his power.” Indeed, He is the almighty Preserver God.
He is the sovereign Lord over all things.
Concerning our Lord Jesus Christ, Psalm 45:1-7 declares, “My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever. Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty. And in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies; whereby the people fall under thee. Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.” Even so, Hebrews 1:8-9 applies this passages directly to our Lord Jesus Christ, saying, “But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.” In addition, concerning our Lord Jesus Christ, Acts 10:36 closes with the truth – “He is Lord of all.” In like manner, concerning Him Romans 9:5 closes with the truth – “Who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.” Even so, in Ephesians 1:18-23 the prayer is lifted up, “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his [God the Father’s] calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: and hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” Yea, in Philippians 2:9-11 the truth is proclaimed, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Thus in Matthew 28:18 our Lord Jesus Christ Himself proclaimed, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” Indeed, He is the almighty Sovereign God.
He is the eternal Savior for sinners.
In Matthew 1:21 Joseph was informed and instructed by the angel, “And she [his espoused wife Mary] shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” Even so, in John 1:12 the promise is given, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” Again in John 6:35 our Lord Jesus Christ Himself gave the promise, “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” Yet again in John 8:12 He gave the promise, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” And yet again in John 10:9-11 He gave the promise, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” Finally, in John 10:27-28 He gave the promise, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” Thus concerning our Lord Jesus Christ, Titus 2:14 declares, “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Again concerning Him Hebrews 2:14-15 declares, “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” Yet again concerning Him Hebrews 5:8-9 declares, “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.” And yet again concerning Him Hebrews 7:25 declares, “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” Finally, concerning Him 1 Peter 2:24 declares, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” Thus 1 John 5:11-13 delivers the assurance of God’s holy Word unto all who trust in God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, for eternal salvation, saying, “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
