Proverbs 1:1 – “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel.”
II. The divine purpose for the book of the Proverbs.
A. To teach us to recognize the way of wisdom and the words of understanding.
Proverbs 1:2 – “To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding.”
B. To move us to receive the instruction of wisdom for our character and conduct.
Proverbs 1:3 – “To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity.”
C. To mature us to reform the character and conduct of our hearts and lives.
Proverbs 1:4 – “To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.”
III. The necessary practice for the book of the Proverbs.
A. We must be humble enough to hear.
Proverbs 1:5a – “A wise man will hear . . . .”
B. We must be humble enough to learn.
Proverbs 1:5a – “. . . And will increase learning.”
C. We must be humble enough to follow.
Proverbs 1:5b – “And a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.”
IV. The foundational principle for the book of the Proverbs.
A. The fear of the Lord is the foundation for wisdom and maturity.
Proverbs 1:7a – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.”
B. The fool by definition is the one who rejects the Lord’s Word and way.
Proverbs 1:7b – “But fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
