The Proverbs & Our Love (Part 2)
Having considered in two previous posts (see above) what the book of the Proverbs teaches concerning the direction and the demonstration of our love, let us now consider what the book of the Proverbs teaches concern-ing our hatred.
1. We should not hate the wisdom of God’s Holy Word.
We are spiritual fools when we hate the wisdom of God’s Word.
Proverbs 1:22 – “How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?”
We hate the wisdom of God’s Word when we refuse to walk in the fear of the Lord.
Proverbs 1:29 – “For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD.”
We hate the wisdom of God’s Word when we reject godly counsel and reproof.
Proverbs 1:29-30 – “For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: they would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.”
Proverbs 5:12-13 – “And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; and have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!”
We shall come to destruction when we hate the wisdom of God’s Word.
Proverbs 1:28-32 – “Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: for that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: they would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.”
Proverbs 5:11-14 – “And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, and say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; and have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.”
We actually love the way of death when we hate the wisdom of God’s Word.
Proverbs 8:34-36 – “Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.”
2. We should hate the wickedness of the evil way.
To hate the evil way is a characteristic of walking in the fear of the Lord.
Proverbs 8:13 – “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”
To hate the evil way is characteristic of learning the wisdom of God’s Word.
Proverbs 8:6-8, 13-14 – “Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things. For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them . . . . The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.”
To hate the evil way means to hate pride, arrogancy, sinfulness, and the froward mouth.
Proverbs 8:13 – “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”
3. We should hate the financial foolishness of suretiship.
Proverbs 11:15 – “He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.”
4. We should not hate the correction of good reproof.
Proverbs 12:1 – “Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.”
Proverbs 15:10 – “Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.”
5. We should hate the unrighteousness of deception and lying.
To hate the way of lying is a characteristic of walking in righteousness.
Proverbs 13:5 – “A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.”
To choose the way of lying is to hate those whom we afflict thereby.
Proverbs 26:224-8 – “He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; when he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation. Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.”
6. We should not hate our children by being sparing in discipline.
Proverbs 13:24 – “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.”
7. We should hate the foolishness of greediness and covetousness.
Proverbs 15:27 – “He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.”
Proverbs 28:16 – “The prince that wanteth understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.”
8. We should not hate those who walk in uprightness.
Proverbs 29:10 – “The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.”
