The book of the Proverbs presents a number of truths concerning that upon which we should or should not set our love, and concerning the manner in which we are to love. In this second part of the study, let us consider the manner in which we should demonstrate our love.
1. A father should love his children by disciplining them quickly, consistently, and spiritually.
Proverbs 3:11-12 – “My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: for whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”
Proverbs 13:24 – “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.”
2. A husbands should love his wife by being always satisfied with her body and ravished with her love.
Proverbs 5:15-19 – “Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee. Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.”
3. We all should love the wisdom of God’s Word by seeking after it early each and every day.
Proverbs 8:17 – “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.”
Proverbs 8:34-35 – “Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.”
4. We all should love our own soul spiritually by pursuing after the wisdom of God’s Word.
Proverbs 8:36 – “But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.”
Proverbs 19:8 – “He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.”
5. We all should love others by forbearing and not taking offense at their faults against us.
Proverbs 10:12 – “Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.”
Proverbs 17:9 – “He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.”
6. We all should pursue love in our relationships as being far more valuable than financial wealth.
Proverbs 15:17 – “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.”
Proverbs 22:1 – “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
7. We all should love as a good friend, at all times through both pleasant times and adverse times.
Proverbs 17:17 – “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
8. We all should love as a good friend, being willing to deliver open rebuke in a spiritual manner.
Proverbs 27:5-6 – “Open rebuke is better than secret love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.”
