To Sing Praises unto Thy Name, O Most High - Psalm 92
I. The Condition of the Wicked. (Psalm 92:6-7)
II. The Confidence of the Righteous. (Psalm 92:8-11, 15)
III. The Continuance of the Righteous. (Psalm 92:12-14)
I. The Condition of the Wicked.
A. They are spiritually foolish without understanding.
Psalm 92:6 – “A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.”
B. They may flourish temporarily in a material way.
Psalm 92:7a – “When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish.”
C. They shall be destroyed by God’s judgment.
Psalm 92:7b – “It is that they shall be destroyed for ever.”
II. The Confidence of the Righteous.
A. The Lord is Most High eternally with unfailing faithfulness.
Psalm 92:8 – “For thou, LORD, art most high for evermore.”
(Note: This confident declaration is placed in direct contrast to the truth the wicked “shall be destroyed
for ever.” In addition, this confident declaration is given as the foundation for the trust that this Lord
shall exalt the righteous in due time and shall cause them to flourish continually in a spiritual way.)
Psalm 92:15 – “To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in
him.”
(Note: This confident declaration is placed at the end of the portion concerning the divine exaltation and
continual flourishing of the righteous. As such, it serves with verse 8 as the foundational and all-
encompassing truth for the confidence of the righteous; for this portion begins with verse 8 and ends
with verse 15. The spiritual confidence of the righteous is founded upon and encompassed by the truth
concerning our Lord, Who is Most High eternally, Who is upright always, Who is our unfailing Rock, Who
is never unrighteous at all.)
B. The Lord shall judge the wicked persecutors of His own.
Psalm 92:9 – “For, lo, thine enemies, O LORD, for, lo, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of
iniquity shall be scattered.”
Psalm 92:11 – “Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire
of the wicked that rise up against me.”
C. The Lord shall exalt the righteous in His due time.
Psalm 92:10 – “But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”
III. The Continuance of the Righteous.
A. They shall flourish with spiritual growth and strength.
Psalm 92:12 – “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.”
B. They shall flourish through fellowship with the Lord.
Psalm 92:13 – “Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.”
C. They shall flourish with spiritual fruitfulness and fatness.
Psalm 92:14 – “They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.”
D. They shall flourish spiritually even “in old age.”
Psalm 92:14 – “They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.”
(Note: It is significant that both the wicked (in verse 7) and the righteous (in verses 12-14) are de-
scribed as flourishing. Yet whereas the wicked flourish materially, the righteous flourish spiritually.
Furthermore, the material flourishing of the wicked is temporary, being decisively ended in destruction
by the Lord’s hand of judgment. On the other hand, the spiritual flourishing of the righteous is continual,
being divinely supported in fruitfulness by the Lord’s hand of blessing.)
