The Welfare Mindset

Thought for Meditation
(And a little bit of politics)

The welfare mindset tends to think selfishly.
It tends to be concerned only with what it can acquire for itself,
at no expense of effort or energy to itself;
and it tends not to consider at all what this might cost someone else.

2 Thessalonians 3:10-11
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you,
that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly,
working not at all, but are busybodies
.

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you:
for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia:
but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;
and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing
.

Philippians 2:4
Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

Ephesians 4:28
Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour,
working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth
.

"and a little bit of politics" -- I disagree! :)

I've got a post percolating on this topic, will finish it some day, Lord willing. We are failing the poor if we do not teach them that "love your neighbour" applies to them, too.

Somebody has to pay for those benefits. Your neighbours are working, their children and yours will have to work, to pay taxes. Eventually the taxes will be paid. When we take welfare benefits that we don't need, we are forcing our neighbours (and eventually our children and grandchildren) to pay more. It is a failure of love to demand more welfare benefits than we need, or make life decisions that increase our need.

Amen, Brother Gleason.

It was similar thoughts as your thoughts above that motivated me to include Ephesians 4:28 in my verse listing -- "Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth."

Those who are receiving welfare help, but who could work for themselves, are actually stealing from their neighbors. To such thieves (yea, to all thieves) the Lord our God gives the instruction that they should stop taking, and should start working for themselves and giving to the truly needy.

Yea, to such the Lord our God gives the instruction that they should stop seeking to get free hand outs, but should rather work with their hands to be giving hand outs. I wonder how much this would revolutionize our welfare system?
