Therefore My Spirit Is Overwhelmed - Psalm 143

Outlines in Psalms

 I.   The Troubled Life

      A.  Attacked by a fierce enemy.
           Verse 3a – “For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground.”

      B.  Dwelling in dark circumstances.
           Verse 3b – “He hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.”

      C.  Troubled in the inner man.
           Verse 4 – “Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.”
           Verse 7a – “Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth.”

           1.  Overwhelmed in heart and spirit
           2.  Desolate in heart and spirit
           3.  Failing in heart and spirit

II.  The Right Response

      A.  Turn to the Lord.
           Verse 1a – “Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications.”
           Verse 6-7 – “I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah. 
           Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go 
           down into the pit.”

      B.  Trust in the Lord.
           Verse 1b – “In thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.”
           Verse 8a – “Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust.”
           Verse 10b – “For thou art my God: thy spirit is good.”

           1.  In His faithfulness
           2.  In His righteousness
           3.  In His lovingkindness
           4.  In His goodness

      C.  Get right with the Lord.
           Verse 2 – “And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.”

      D.  Meditate upon the Lord.
           Verse 5 – “I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.”
 
           1.  On His works
           2.  On His wonders
           3.  On His Word

      E.  Thirst after the Lord.
           Verse 6 – “I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.”

      F.  Learn from the Lord.
           Verse 8b – “Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.”
           Verse 10 – “Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of 
           uprightness.”

          1.  To know His way
          2.  To do His will
          3.  To walk in His uprightness

      G.  Wait upon the Lord.
            Verse 9 – “Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me.”
            Verse 12a – “And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that afflict my soul.”

      H.  Desire all for the Lord’s glory.
           Verse 11 – “Quicken me, O LORD, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of 
           trouble.”

      I.  Remain faithful unto the Lord.
          Verse 12b – “For I am thy servant.”
