Meditations in Exodus
This meditation is a companion to a previous mediation: What Is His Name? - Exodus 3:13-15 (Part 1)
Exodus 3:13 reads, “And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?”
In Exodus 3:9-10 the Lord God expressed his call upon Moses to send Moses as His instrument of deliverance for His people Israel. In verse 11 Moses responded with an expression of humility and hopelessness concerning his ability to fulfill the Lord’s call – “And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?” In answer, the Lord God responded with His promise to be with Moses and to enable Moses in fulfilling His call – “And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.”
Yet in Exodus 3:13 Moses presents another question unto the Lord God. This question did not concern Moses’ inability, but now concerned the Lord God’s nature and ability. Indeed, Moses indicated that the children of Israel would ask concerning the name and nature of this God of their fathers who had sent Moses unto them – “What is his name?” In verse 12 the Lord had promised to be with Moses and enable Him. So then, who is this Lord God who will be with His servants and His people – “What is his name?” In verse 10 the Lord had placed His call upon Moses to send Him unto His people. So then, who is this Lord God who calls and sends His servants unto His people to lead them and help them – “What is his name?” In verse 8 the Lord had pronounced His purpose to deliver His people from their affliction and to bless them with abundance. So then, who is this Lord God who will help and deliver His servants and His people in their affliction – “What is his name?” In verse 4 the Lord had proclaimed His personal recognition of His people’s sufferings and sorrows. So then, who is this Lord God who personally knows the sorrows of His servants and His people – “What is his name?” Yea, what is the name and the nature of this Lord God, the Lord our God?
Already in the first part of the meditation (see above), we have considered three truths, that the Lord our God is the Self-Existing One, the Eternal One, and the Unchanging One. In this second part of the meditation, let us consider three further truths.

The Almighty One
In Exodus 3:15 the Lord God continued His answer unto Moses – “And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” The name “God” means “mighty one.” In relation to the Lord our God Himself, it means “the ALMIGHTY One.” Yea, it refers to the Lord our God as the Almighty Creator, Almighty Upholder, and Almighty Sovereign of heaven and earth. He is “Lord God Almighty, which is, and was, and is to come.” (Revelation 4:8) So then, what does this mean in relation to our lives? It means that the Lord our God will ever be powerful enough to meet the needs of His servants and His people. As such, it also means that no one can overcome Him in His purpose to care for His servants and His people. When He determines to move on behalf of His own, there is no force whatsoever that can stay His hand. Indeed, “he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)
The Personal One
In Exodus 3:15 the Lord God referred to Himself as “The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” In so doing, the Lord our God was indicating that He is a personal Lord God for His servants and His people. He is not just the Lord God of heaven and earth up above somewhere. Certainly, He “hath prepared his throne in the heavens,” from which He rules over all the creation as the Sovereign Lord God of heaven and earth. (Psalm 103:19) Yet the Lord our God also abides with His own down here personally. He never leaves His own, nor forsakes His own. (Hebrews 13:5) Although the Lord our God is infinitely high even above the heavens, so that He “humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth,” yet He has “respect unto the lowly” among His servants and His people. (Psalm 113:4-6; 138:6) So then, what does this mean in relation to our lives? It means that the Lord our God will personally involve Himself in our daily walk to meet our personal need through His personal grace. As such, it also means that we can and should humbly cast all of our cares upon Him, because He personally cares for us. (1 Peter 5:6-7)
The Worthy One
In the closing portion of Exodus 3:15, the Lord God declared unto Moses, “This is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” His name, I AM THAT I AM, the LORD God, is His memorial. Yea, His name is His memorial for each and every generation. As such, the Lord our God is the One true and living God. As such, the Lord our God is the one and only worthy LORD God. He alone is worthy of our worship, and He is worthy of all our worship. Therefore, we are required to give unto Him “the glory due unto his name,” and to worship Him alone “in the beauty of holiness.” (Psalm 29:2) Yea, this means that we must place our trust in Him, must prioritize our love for Him, and must pursue obedience to Him in all things. We must trust Him, love Him, and obey Him with all our heart and with all our soul.
