"Not about Rules, but about a Relationship"

Thought for Meditation
(This thought is a companion to a previous thought for meditation:  Love for God Defined)

It is often said that true Christianity is not about rules and regulations,
but is about a loving relationship with the Lord our God.
Indeed, this is a true statement -- as far as it goes,
in meaning that true Christianity is not foundationally about rules and regulations,
but is foundationally about a loving relationship with the Lord our God.
Yet it must ever be remembered
that we cannot walk aright in a loving relationship with the Lord our God
if we do not faithfully pursue obedience to His rules and regulations.

Deuteronomy 11:1
Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God,
and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway
.

Deuteronomy 11:13

And it shall come to pass,
if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day,
to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul
. . .

Deuteronomy 11:22

For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them,
to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him
. . .

Deuteronomy 30:16a

In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways,
and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments,
that thou mayest live and multiply
.

Deuteronomy 30:20

That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice,
and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days
.

John 14:15

If ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 14:21
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me:
and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father,
and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him
.

John 14:23-24

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words:
and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings:
and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me
.

If we love God, we will want to be close to Him and we will not want to cause Him pain or distress. But He cannot be close to sin: it has to be as far removed from Him as East is from West. It pains Him to even see sin. So to be close to Him we need to remove ourselves as far from sin as we can by doing what He commands. Jesus, God's Son, told us that this is how He knows we love Him, that we do what He commanded us to do.
