Weekly Sermon

This sermon is a companion to four previous sermons:
Blessed Be the Most High God - Genesis 14:19-20
The Most High Ruleth - Daniel 4:32
The Most High Uttereth His Voice - 2 Samuel 22:14
Sing Praise to the Name of the Lord Most High - Psalm 7:17

Psalm 91:1 reads, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”  The Lord our God is the most high God, the almighty and eternal Lord God of heaven and earth.  As the most high God, the Lord our God does indeed involve himself in the affairs of our lives and does indeed care for His own with faithful lovingkindness.  So then, how should we who are God’s own dear children respond unto Him as the most high God?  Through a study within the book of the Psalms, let us consider six ways in which we are to respond unto the Lord our God, as the most high God.

Proverbs for Life

The foundational principle for the entire book of the Proverbs and for the spiritual wisdom that this book teaches is found in Proverbs 1:7 – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”  So then, what does the book of the Proverbs directly indicate concerning the fear of the Lord?

Meditations in Jeremiah

This meditation is a companion to a previous meditation:  A Provocation of Mine Anger - Jeremiah 32:26-35

Jeremiah 32:42-44 – “For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.  And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.”

The Lord Is Merciful and Gracious – Psalm 103:8-18

Outlines in Psalms

This outline is a companion to three previous outlines:  And Forget Not All His Benefits - Psalm 103:1-5
Bless the Lord, O My Soul - Psalm 103:1-2, 20-22
Bless His Holy Name - Psalm 103

The two themes that tie this central portion of Psalm 103 together are as follows:  (1) the mercy of the Lord that He displays toward us, and (2) the fear of the Lord that we are to maintain toward Him.

Psalm 103:8 – “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.”

Psalm 103:11 – “For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.”

Psalm 103:13 – “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.”

Psalm 103:17 – “But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children.”

Far in Separation or Near to Hear – Proverbs 15:29

Proverbs for Life

Proverbs 15:29 – “The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.”

A proverbial statement might be defined as a short, meaningful saying that expresses a significant, substantial truth for life.  In the book of the Proverbs, a proverb is often constructed with two lines, presenting a comparison or contrast.  Proverbs 15:29 presents a truth of contrast.  Whereas the Lord our God separates Himself far from the wicked, He abides close to the righteous in order that He might hear and answer their prayers.

Approaching God – Exodus 3:5-6

Meditations in Exodus

This meditation is a companion to a previous meditation:  I Will Now Turn Aside - Exodus 3:1-4

Exodus 3:1-4 reads, “Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.  And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.  And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.  And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses.  And he said, Here am I.”

A bush that caught fire in the desert under the oppressive heat of the sun was not an amazing sight.  Yet, certainly, a bush that burned, but was not consumed was a very amazing sight.  Thus Moses decided to turn aside from his common path as a shepherd in order to observe this amazing sight more closely.  Yet this amazing sight did not exist simply for the sake of Moses’ curiosity.  Rather, it existed in order that the Lord might get Moses’ attention.  Even so, when Moses turned aside to approach the amazing sight of the burning bush, the Lord God “called unto him out of the midst of the bush.”  Thus Moses’ perspective of this event was brought to a change.  He now understood that he was not simply approaching an amazing sight, but was actually approaching the Almighty God.  Indeed, the Lord God immediately stopped Moses from approaching any further in order that He might teach Moses how to approach aright.

A proverb is a short, pithy saying that expresses a significant, substantial truth for life.  In the book of the Proverbs, the actual compilation of proverbial statements begins with chapter 10 and extends to the end of the book.  In the following series of posts, I wish to present those proverbial statements that specifically mention our relationship with the Lord.  Certainly, every proverb of God’s Holy Word concerns our relationship with the Lord our God; for every proverb concerns the character of our walk before Him.  Yet the following list of proverbial statements make specific mention of the Lord and of our relationship to Him.  In the first six parts of this study (see above), we considered passages from Proverbs 10-24.  In this part of the study, we shall consider passages from Proverbs 25-31.
